Avegno is located along the road and you can reach this town through the valley of the Recco torrent, by crossing the Caprile pass, and the Fontanbuona Valley. This road is taken by those who want to reach the Via Aurelia, but want to avoid Genoa. Avegno is scattered along the two sides of the torrent and it is famous worldwide for its bell foundery. It became autonomous from Uscio in 1797 and it is made up of many communities such as: Molino Nuovo, Avegno Chiesa, Testana, and Salto. Coming from Recco you can enter the Avegno territory by crossing the Vexina bridge, where the road has allowed the torrent to flow through the valley and through copse, chestnut and olive woods.
The Church of St. Margherita in Testana is of great artistic interest. Inside it contains a wooden alter-piece that portrays the Passion Story attributed to the 16th century Flemish school and a Nativity Scene by Giovanni Andrea De Ferrari. Vexina is the smallest community and it is located on the top of hill surrounded by woods that cover the slopes of the Caravaggio mountain. This area is known for its weekend picnics as well as for its small restaurants. Salto is located 300 meters high and in the past it was in the possession of the Marquis Malaspina.
The patronal Feast dedicated to the Madonna della Salute is celebrated on the first Sunday of August. There is a procession where individuals carry the different crucifixes and there are also fireworks. The main groups that have given Avegno its name can be found along the slopes that are near the Recco torrent and it is subdivided into many residential areas that make up the different neighborhoods. Of particular interest is Pietrafitta that has small restaurants. In the 15th century it was a refuge for the people of Recco who would escape during the Saracen raids, which were very frequent along the Ligurian coast. Another small restaurant can be found in Lagoscuro while the office of the Civic Administration can be found in Molino Nuovo. Avegno was a feud of Malaspina just like Salto and it became a local government with the Testana community in 1798 in occasion of the constitution of the Ligurian Republic as well as passage under the Sardinian Kingdom.
