Casella is a pleasing resort located on the south side of Mount Maggio (978 meters). In the past it was the estate of the Tortona bishops and later of the Fieschi family.
In the past its importance was determined by the fact that it was situated in a plain formed by the Scrivia Valley and therefore it was a crossroad for trading goods that came from the Port of Genoa.
It was accused of having favored the Habsburg troops and it was destroyed in 1747 by the Genoese.
It includes seven other communities and it is the end of the line for the small train that leaves Genoa and intertwines beautiful sceneries such as: the Valbisagno, Valpocevera, and Scrivia Valleys.
Because of its position, climate and connection to Genoa by the small train it is one of the preferred destinations for the Genoese. At Casella you can also participate in many excursions such as:
- to get to Pedemonte you will cross the Crocetta di Orero pass, Orero, and Costa Fontana. You will then descend into the valley of the Secca torrent and on its side you will see Pedemonte; to reach Monte Maggio there is a 978 meters hike.
- to get to Mount Antola (1598 meters) you will pass Val Brevenna, Mulino del Fullo, Roiale, Piancassina, and Lavazzuoli.
Of great artistic interest is the Parish Church of St. Stefano that has a Nativity scene of the Domenico Fiasella school and the Encounter of Mary with St. Elizabeth by Giovanni Andrea De Ferrari.
