The Isola del Cantone is the last local government of the Genoa province and its on the Piedmont boundary.
Isola is located along the two sides where the Scrivia and Vobbia torrents meet. A document that dates back to 1313 of the Emperor Enrico VII confirms the possession of the town by the Spinola family but the story of the Feud results anonyms.
However you can visit the remains of three castles. At the first castle there is little to observe because after so many transformations its style has been erased, the second castle has a few remains in the community of Montessoro, while the Castle of Piano also called Spinola – Mignacco has maintained its wholeness and it expresses the typical feudal image.
A great economic development occurred in the last century when the railway and the restoration of the state road reintroduced trading as well as numerous industrial sites. Of great importance are the various inns that are located along the road and it has been told that Manzoni after an accident made a reservation here during his trip to Genoa.
The urbanistic development of the town has a particular formation. The Parish Church of St. Michele has a crucifix of the Genoese school and it preserves the relics of St. Stefano and St. Innocenzo. Of historical importance is Pietrabissara, which is a very small town that receives no sunlight because it is hidden by the mountains. However this town preserves Palazzo Spinola that was famous for its military protection.
Despite its calm and relaxing aspect, the construction and industrial development has made Isola del Cantone and its inhabitants economically stronger, allowing it to survive difficult periods of recession. However its economy is strong thanks to its tourists that visit the mountains and savor the green panorama. Pinoceto and Borlasca are a cocktail of old and modern due to its new residential areas. Of great interest are the Vobbietta lakes, which is a perfect destination for fishing, summer swims, and for those who love to see the reflection of nature in the crystal clear lake.
