THE CASTLES ON THE SEA

At Camogli the Castello della Dragonara or Castello Dragone was built to protect its people when pirate raids and political feuds would disrupt the everyday life of the villages. Its existence dates back to 13th century documents. With the passing of the centuries it slowly lost its importance as a defensive structure and in the 15th century it became the center of feuds that caused its destruction and efforts for its reconstruction. In the 16th century it was down-graded, but in the 19th century it once again became a symbol of the local tradition.

From Camogli to Portofino and from Santa Margherita to Rapallo you will experience the most interesting and unique Ligurian history:

THE CASTLE ON THE SEA

At Potorfino Castello Brown was built due to military reasons. The first dates of its construction date back to 1425 and 1430 as stated by documents in the State Archive. The fortification consisted in a platform that was orientated towards the port and an elliptical tower. Between 1554 and 1557 the castle was expanded towards the port and a watchtower was built. The increase in the number of levels in the castle allowed for a greater military presence. Other constructions took place in 1664 and between 1725-1728; Napoleon reinforced the armament and this is the last development of the mighty castle which was then demilitarized in 1867. It was then bought in 1870 by Sir. Montague Yeats Brown of the English consul in Genoa. It was then restored according to the luxury of that time. The last owner of the castle was John Baber and since 1961 the fort has become property of the local government.
