The territory of Moconesi’s local government contains many communities that are scattered in the upper valley of the Lavagna torrent.
In fact, it is in this territory that the oldest findings that pertain to the presence of humans in the Fontanabuona Valley were found. Precisley at Ferrada and they go back 8000 years ago during the Mesolithic period.
Near the Church of Moconesi they have found tombs that date back to Roman times.
In fact the place-name of Moconesi seems to have derived form the Romans and it means “casa di Mocco” (home of Mocco), which is tied to a Roman that was mentioned on the bronze table that dates back to 117 B.C..
In the past the various communities belonged to the Parish Church of Cicagna and others were under the jurisdiction of Uscio.
The population of this territory has always been active thanks to its strategical position on the road that connected the cities of the Riviera with the towns that were located beyond the Apennines.
It has a long tradition of structures and culture and they built and maintained bridges, roads, and mule tracks in order to favor trading.
The abundance of water favored the milling activities. The most famous person of this area that is proof of the populations dynamism is without a doubt Christopher Columbus.
The road system that allows you to reach this town is mainly made up of the road of the valley floor and just like in ancient times it traces the route of Lavagna parallel to the coast.
Then there are other roads that lead you to valleys and crests of the Caucaso by reaching various interesting towns: Barbagelata, Faggio Rotondo, Roccatagliata, and Gattorna where the Neirone and Lavagna Torrents meet.
