In Moneglia the Castle of Villafranca stands in a special panoramic view position all over the Gulf of Tigullio. It was probably founded by Genoeses around 1100 after the battles between Republic of Genoa and Malaspina Family.
It was damaged on 1377 and on 1477. The outside walls are very irregular it is due to the same morphology of ground. However you can inscribe the Castle on a pentagon. In the centre rises the Tower. Between the outside walls and the crossing there are two watch towers, but only one presents well kept. |
During centuries stronghold was damaged and modified. Among various transformations the most evident is the construction of a railway near to the coast, crossing the rock where the Castle stands.
A great work of restructuring was made by Burgo Family. |
During the 2nd World War the Castle was damaged both inside and in the tower which loose the second floor and the upstairs terrace. To demonstrate the original structure of the Castle and its tower there are only some old photos pre-war period.
