The history of Nervi dates back to 1143. This town along with its citizens has always followed the political events of Genoa. In 1814 the town was bombed by an English squad led by Guglielmo Bentinck that was moving towards the French attacks settled on Mount Fasce. Nervi is located along the sea and is surrounded by a lush vegetation of olive, citrus, pine and ilex trees and without a doubt it is the oldest and most famous resort of the Riveria Levante even during winter.
The popularity of Nervi is due to its mild climate that is determined by its closeness to the sea and also because it is protected by the mountains that shield it from the northern winds.
This climate allows you to enjoy walks along the famous Anita Garibaldi promenade even during the winter. It is about 2 kilometers long and it unravels along the coast taking you to the peak of the cliff. The Torre dei Groppallo was built in the 14th century to protect the town from pirate raids. From this tower you can admire a breathtaking view that begins with the Portofino and Camogli promontories all the way to the Riveria Ponente.
Behind the promenade you can a enjoy a park thanks to the unification of the Serra and Groppallo villas. This park has created a habitat for the typical plant life of the Riviera such as pine, ilex and palm trees but you can also find rare exotic trees. Within the park of Villa Serra there is the Gallery of Modern Art where you can admire a vast range of Ligurian art of the 19th and 20th centuries. Well represented are the works of Barabino.
Another interesting place to visit is the plebian Church of San Siro built in the 13th century. It underwent various modifications in the 17th century. The vault is decorated with Paganelli and Semini frescos while above the entrance there is the organ and choir stalls designed by Barabino. The table represents San Siro on the throne and the two saints are attributed to Teramo Piaggio. Other art collocations can be admired in the Luxoro Museum located in the Villa in a garden above the cliff.
Among the objects that are shown (furniture, clocks, copper, majolica, silver and paintings) you can also visit works of Magnasco: Frati in orazione, Frati in preghiera and Capriccio. As you can see, Nervi offers a mix of nature, promenades, climate and artists that make Nervi one of the most privileged spots of Ligurian tourism. |
