pegli 1 How to get there: Highway A10 Genova-Ventimiglia exit Pegli.

Pegli is a district of Genoa and it has preserved its environmental features that were once part of the western suburb.

When Pegli’s history as a village holiday for tourists ended, it became a qualified residential area.

In fact its history began in the middle of the last century when resorts and thalassotherapy were a big hit.

After the second postwar period tourism boomed and this event remains alive in the Genoese memory.

The first stage of urban transformation dates back to the second half of the last century.

Between 1856 (opening of the railway Genoa-Voltri) and 1879 the center of Pegli arose, which was hinged to Piazza Ponchielli and on the axis of Via Pallavicini.

Villa Pallavicini was decentralized from the residential area and due to a road construction that led to the Villa it became very important in the eyes of its citizens.

The road went around Piazza Ponchielli.

Between the “embarcadero” (that indicated the railway station with a curious transposition of naval terminology), in front of Hotel Michel, and the entrance into the Villa, which then leads to the sea.

This is how Pegli became a prestigious summer and winter resort that was frequented by the European aristocracy.
