Recco is one of the town councils you will encounter along the Paradise Gulf. It is located only 20 kilometers from Genoa and here you can enjoy its many touristy and gastronomical shops.
In 2001 Recco was inaugurated with the name Città (city) due to its dynamism and its desire to grow and develop thanks to its citizens and workers. Recco has a beautiful geographical position because it is located at the mouth of a river, it is surrounded by hills and it faces the open sea. These unique features explain the importance of the Città that date back to the remote past.
The consul Emilio Scauro (163 – 89 B.C.) wished for the construction of the coastal road that made the Città a military base of great strategical importance. From the 13th century to 1797 Recco was part of the Genoa Republic and in 1943-45 it was almost completely destroyed by the war. Recco underwent a series of air raids that killed 127 civilians, about a dozen of soldiers at the fronts and at sea and many are missing.
This is why in February 1992 Recco was awarded by the President of the Republic a gold medal for its Civil Merit. Recco is also the birthplace of: San Giovanni Bono, Nicoloso a great navigator who rediscovered the Canary Islands in 1341, the Admiral Biagio Assereto that in the Ponza battle destroyed the fleet of King Alfonso d’Aragona and the scientist Fortunio Liceti.
Among the ancient monuments in Recco the most important ones are: the Parish Church dedicated to S. G. Battista and S. G. Bono, the parish churches in the hamlets of Polanesi that date back to 1100’s, the Megli and S. Rocco churches that are ancient and rich in artistic history, the Sanctuary of S. Michele and the Sanctuary of Suffrage which are the homes of ancient brotherhoods. One must also visit the Church and Convent of RR.PP. Franciscans that has a interesting cloister located on the sea cliff and the old Convent of S. Nicola that today is a private home.
