Sestri Levante is a town that is located in the South-East of the Tigullio Gulf on the alluvial plain of the Gromolo torrent and along the isthmus that unites the land to the rocky promontory of the Isalnd, just like in the 11th century.
Today Sestri Levante has become an important tourist attraction and it has a great industrial tradition that dates back to the second half of the last century.
Great industrial complexes were built in Sestri and communications were facilitated thanks to the opening of a road that connected Levanto to the Aurelia and the construction of the Genoa-La Spezia railway line.
Recently the residential area has expanded in an inorganic way due to the demand of homes since there has been an increase in labor for the industries as well as for the tourist sector not to mention the increase of second homes.
Founded by Liguri Tigulli, in Roman times the ancient Segesta Tigulliorum was an important business and maritime center. The two roads that crossed the Bracco Pass and the Velva Col united the Ligurian coast with Lunigiana and the Vara Valley as well as the Cento Croci Pass and the Taro Valley.
It was later destroyed during the period of Barbary raids and in Medieval times it went from the Fieschi family to the Republic of Genoa, which enforced the area by building castles on the Island and on the tip of Manara.
