Sestri Ponente is one of the most important districts of Genoa.
It has transformed into a modern industrial city while leaving its seafaring and agricultural roots behind.
This transformation took place due to the development of the shipbuilding and steel and iron industries that began in 1880 up until WWI.
This development began when Ansaldo was in search of new areas for facilities. Ansaldo then bought the Cadenaccio shipyard, which expanded between the Cantarena stream in the west and the Molinassi stream in the east, today it is known as Via Merano.
Between Cantarena and the Chiaravagna torrent there are the Odero shipyards as well as the Raggio ironworks industry. However, the historical industry continues to build towards the sea.
But, this is the only available area for the expansion of homes and industries that have reached a saturation point, which is still visible despite the recent transformation of some industrial areas into residential areas in the west.
In the meantime, due to the importance of the industries there was a halt in summer tourism. In fact, tourism had renewed the modern hotels as well as the ancient aristocratic traditions that would stay at the sea resorts. However, after a ten-year long conflict, the use of the sandy shore was given to the shipyards.
Today Sestri is proud to have a productive structure of great technological advancement that includes a vast network of facilities and services.
All this contributes to its urban quality that is difficult to find anywhere else in the Genoese conurbation context due to its strong socio-cultural aggregation, which originates from a strong tradition of workers. |
