How to get there: Highway A10 Genoa-Ventimiglia exit at Bordighera.
An old legend narrates that the anchorite St. Ampelio while bringing seeds back from Egypt searched for a place favored by God to plant palm trees.
This is how a rapid vegetation of palm and olive trees developed along the coast.
It developed as a town of fisherman and farmers and in 1471 the area extended to Bordighera Alta. As time passed and after the publication of the English Translation of “Dr. Antonio” by G. Ruffini an unexpected tourist importance was given to the enchanting town which was greatly frequented by European artists.
Today, Bordighera represents a destination for elite tourists. It is a city of humor that holds a great international manifestation of cartoon artists and satire comedy during July. Bordighera is divided into two distinct parts: the historical center or Bordighera Alta and the modern areas along the coast.
Piazza De Amicis unites the two parts of the city and here you can admire the Municipality of Charles Garnier and a marble fountain adorned by the statue by Magiargè.
The old picturesque area has charming homes, the Porta Sottana, the 1617 Church of Maria Maddalena that has rococo stuccos, and the Oratory of St. Bartolomeo degli Armeni (end of the 15th century).
Going down the panoramic Spianata del Capo you will find the 1200 Romanic Church of St. Ampelio that is located on a cliff and inside you can admire the crypt of the Saint.
The Biknell Museum, seat of the International Institute of Ligurian Studies was founded in 1888 and it contains magnificent findings. You can also visit the valleys of the hinterland.
