How to get there: exit at Albenga (Highway A10 Genoa-Ventimiglia) and take the road for Pieve di Teco. After passing Ortovero you will reach the town. Other panoramic routes that lead to the town are from Belvedere of Alassio, through Testico or from Imperia through Via Pontedassio.
The agricultural center of the Arroscia Valley is distributed in a linear way on the two sides of the street near the mouth of the Calabria River.
It was a territory of Clavesana and it was given to the Genovese in 1512 and it became part of the Capitaneato of Pieve di Teco. Olive groves and gardens divide the rural landscape that is made up of small agglomerates and communities.
From the Baroque Parish Church of St. Marco Evangelista located at the beginning of the town a religious route begins. There is a 1544 polyptych by Giorgio Guido from Ranzo located in the oratory of Madonna della Neve. There is another polyptych by Pietro Guido, the father of Giorgio and it dates back to 1532 and it is in the Parish Church of St. Antonio Abate at Ubaga.
Other interesting pieces of art can be found at Gavenola, the Parish Church of San Colombano which is the largest Church of the valley after the one in Pieve di Teco. It was built in 1796 in a Neoclassical style with one nave and regular base. Inside the temple you can admire the wooden statue of the dead Christ and three cases of the flagellation of Maragliano. There is also a beautiful 17th century alter piece inside the oratory of St. Caterina near the parish church of Leverone called St. Bernardo Abate.
On the summit of Col di St. Cosmio there is the Sanctuary of St. Cosmio and St. Damiano that witnessed the battle between the French and those of Piedmont in 1794.
At Ubaga you can see the traces of a Tower with a quadrangular base also known as “Castello di Ubaga.”
At Leverone there is a therapeutic and clear mineral water, a delicious olive oil, a delicate Pigato and a prestigious Ornasco. These represent the best local productions and in the summer the air is perfumed by colorful and extraordinary apricots and delicious peaches. |
