Logo How to get there: exit at Imperia Est (Highway A10 Genoa-Ventimiglia) and go towards Pontedassio and after passing Chuisavecchia and S. Lazzaro Reale you will reach Borgomaro.

During the first years of Christianity where previous Roman settlements has spread Pagan rituals, the evangelists Nazario and Celso went up the Impero Valley and crossed the most important town of the Maro Valley.

In the year 1000 its inhabitants built a monumental church dedicated to the most holy. Today, the church still has its majestic structure with black stone columns, naves, and portals of great interest.

The area is located along the torrent and it is a charming urban complex. It has many communities that offer unique places of history and culture.

The unique oil presses worked thanks to the Impero Torrent and this olive oil production made the town a prosperous trading place with the nearby Piedmont Region.

Some ruins of the “castrum macri” at Muro Castello, which is the oldest settlement allows you to understand the solid fortification that protected the valley.

The “Villa dei Pellegrini” is located in S. Sebastiano and from here you can go to Villa S. Pietro, the birthplace of Pietro vincenzo Mela.

He is well-known thanks to his procedures in making olive oil especially during the phase of working the olive.

Continuing along the panoramic route you will be left speechless by the beauty of the area. From Passo del Maro to the Colle d’Oggia you will reach Conio, which is a charming mountain town near the Impero Torrent.

At the summit of the town you can see the ruins of the strategical Castle of the Counts of Ventimiglia. At the valley floor you can admire the Church of St. Maurizio that has an original Romanic bell tower.

Mule tracks complete the stupendous patrimony of the Maro Valley that reminds us of the difficult farming life that passed down the tradition of cultivating olive trees that make a fantastic Ligurian extra virgin olive oil.
