Along the road from Dolceacqua to Pigna you will come across Lake Pigo and then Castel Vittorio.

You can also reach the town from San Remo, Arma di Taggia, Ceriana, or Baiardo.

The strategical “Castrum Dodi” is a defensive stronghold that has high walls and four towers. It was the feudal center of the Counts of Ventimiglia and then garrison of the Republic of Genoa.

The Casa Savoy received its possession which they maintained for many years. The old place-name was Castel Franco and it was replaced with Castel Vittorio in 1862 in honor of the first Italian king.

The secular disagreements with Pigna became object of fantastic episodes that are still discussed today under the shade of the bell towers.

A curious fact is that in 1727 the inhabitants of Pigna stole the bells of the castle tower. The presence of the Superb is still visible in the coat of arms of Porta Cumunis.

Of great interest is the urban development of the town that is scattered from the top to the bottom in a circular shape, however it is very similar to many towns of the Ligurian hinterland.

At the top you can admire the Parish Church of St. Stefano that has a Baroque style as well as beautiful bas-reliefs.

Chestnut trees and grazing lands highlight the farming life that has almost died out. However it is a beautiful town where you can here the flow of the torrents.

There are also many abandoned towns that portray sadness, however, of great artistic scenery are the rural towns immersed in the green nature.

Buggio opens the way to the Col Melosa and the Col of Langan and from here you can see Mount Macccarello. This majestic mountain dominates the entire panorama that allows you to admire the entire Valle del Roia.
