How to get there: exit at Imperia Ovest or Arma di Taggia (Highway A10 Ge-Ventimiglia).
From the Via Aurelia SS1 you will go up a hill from Santo Stefano or Santo Lorenzo al Mare. The typical Ligurian town extends among flowers and olive groves and it is always blessed with sunshine.
A legend tells that some farmers of Cipro who escaped the arid land of the island, landed on the shore of Aregai. From here they went to the hinterland where they found perfect conditions in order to settle. This is how Cipressa originated.
It was always raided by pirates, therefore, the residential area was destroyed more than once and rebuilt by the Benedictine Monks that drew a Statute, which was approved in the second half of the 1200’s.
The homes made out of stones, the dark narrow alleys used for defensive reasons, and the earthquake-proof arches can be admired. The Cipressa territory belongs to the jurisdiction of Taggia.
From the historical center you can see the Parish Church della Visitazione that has a Maragliano statue and a Baroque Oratory.
In the nearby Costarainera that overlooks the sea, there is the interesting Gothic Church of St. Antonio. There are only a few ruins of the Church of St. Sebastiano and the Torre del Poggio that are immersed in the Mediterranean shrubs.
Very particular is the Parish Church of San Giovanni Battista. At Lingueglietta there is the small Romanic Church of St. Pietro that was built in the year 1000. It has an intact apse and an extraordinary medieval flooring.
The small rounded off corners of the towers highlights the buildings great defensive role. There are also enchanting places that offer infinite corners of beauty such as the “scuri Liguri.”
The beautiful rays of sunshine and beautiful flowers colour the territory that allows you to see the crystal clear waters of the sea.
