How to get there: Highway A10 Genoa-Ventimiglia and exit at S. Bartolomeo al Mare and continue along the Sate Route for Diano Castello.
You can also reach the town by exiting at Imperia Est.
The famous area is located along the crest that divides the Valley of the San Pietro Torrent and the Varcavello Valley.
It has ancient origins and “Castrum Diani” was aready quoted in documents that date back to 1033.
It was also the home of the Roman “mansio” of Lucus Birmani during the terrible barbaric and Saracen raids.
Fro a brief period of time it was subjected to the Marca Alamarica and it then became a feud of the Marquis Clavesana until 1228 when the Republic of Genoa took over for many years.
It fought along side the Maritime Republic against the Pisan’s in the important Meloria Battle.
In the second half of the 1300’s, Diano Castello drew up their own Statutes and therefore they created there own independence.
Historical, architectural, and artistic findings highlight the medieval town making it one of the most fascinating and inviting historical centers of the Riviera di Ponente.
In fact, today you can admire the ruins of a typical medieval city wall that has doors that go to the “Castrum Diani.”
Very beautiful is the Baroque Parish Church dedicated to St. Nicolò and the 17th century Oratory of St. Croce and St. Bernardino, the Church of St. Giovanni Battista has a precious 15th century painting, and St. Maria Assunta.
The Palazzo Comunale of Diano Castello contains a rich documentation that narrates the vicissitudes of the town. It also has a magnificent fresco that portrays the galley combats that reminds us of the Meloria battles.
