In the plains between Capo Cervo and Capo Berta there was an ancient Roman temple, Lucus Birmani, dedicated to Diana.

Of the two ancient towns that make up San Barlolomeo, that is, Rovere and San Bartolomeo, the former preserved traces of the ancient Roman settlement with archaeological findings of ceramics that date to before the Roman conquest.

The residential areas developed in this area, but in the Middle Ages the population moved to the hills and founded the different towns that still exist today.

Near the highway exit rises the town of San Bartolomeo with its City Hall. Nearby is the Church that distinguishes itself for the pointy shape of its bell tower, revealing its late medieval origins.

The church suffered serious damage during the earthquake of 1887, but it was rebuilt on the original design. Inside, there is an important polyptych by De Rossi that dates to 1562.

San Bartolomeo al Mare is divided into two distinct areas: the Borgo della Rovere located at the foot of the Sanctuary Madonna della Rovere, which has become a famous destination for pilgrims.

The Church, which has a beautiful parvis in black and white stones at the entrance, has a neoclassical façade and a marvellous portal in slate with a bas-relief of the Annunciation.

Inside, the three naves boast polygonal pilasters, there is a statue of the Madonna, a wood Crucifix in Catalan style that dates to the XV century, a polyptych from the XVI century, and a sixteenth century painting of the Madonna and Child.

For nature lovers, from San Bartolomeo you can reach the Valle del Cervo. Here one can do many excursions among green trees and olive groves.

Among the many possibilities, don’t miss the walk that leads to the Borgo di Poiolo. Here one finds a beautiful seventeenth century Oratory dedicated to Saint Anne.
