How to get there: exit at Albenga (Highway A10 Genoa-Ventimiglia) and take the road for Ortovero and after passing Borghetto d’Arroscia you will reach Vessalico.
From Pieve di Teco you can reach the town from Oneglia Chiusavecchia.
The small agricultural center of the Arroscia Valley is a unique agglomerate that extends along the streets.
In the year 1000 the inhabitants of the area united and built a series of homes on the left side of the Arroscia that was united by a bridge.
This is why the area received the place-name Borgo del Ponte Nuovo (Town of the New Bridge).
However, when it united with other nearby communities in order to benefit from the trades of Oneglia, Pieve, and Ormea it was subject to a “Capitaneato.”
Therefore, from “Vexilium” it became Vessalico. The secure union originated one of the first armies against illegal trading near Lenzari.
It was a territory of Clavesana and it was then given to the Republic of Genoa, The homes have a late medieval structure and they also have a pinch of Baroque due to the narrow underground passages.
Very beautiful is the 1400 Casa Manfredi that has two mullioned windows and a magnificent inscription above the door.
The church of St. Maria Maddalena has magnificent frescos and the 18th century Oratory della Visitazione offers Baroque masterpieces.
Above the town there is the small Church of St. Andrea which is a great example of Romanic architecture and it has a beautiful 12th century arched portal.
Peaches, apricots, extra virgin olive oil, and two DOC wines (Pigato and Ormeasco) help the local agricultural economy. |
