How to get there: Highway A12 Genoa-La Spezia exit at Carrodano and continue along the State Route 331 towards Carro.
Carro is a beautiful community of the Ligurian Apennines and it contains the communtiues of Castello and Ziona and it has become a well-known summer resort.
In Medieval times it was possession of the Estensi and later that of the Da Passano family. It became an autonomous government in 1229 under the protection of the Republic of Genoa.
Much of the local population is still dedicated to agriculture but others had to choose jobs in other places therefore they had to face the problem of commuting.
When exploring the Val di Vara you will encounter the town of Carrodano that is made up of other communities and it has maintained its features of a rural town with a linear structure. Brugnato is an agricultural center that is recently going through an industrial development and Borghetto di Vara is a welcoming town that was destroyed during the bombings of 1945.
The lively town of Carro was restructured in its lower part but it still maintained its original forms and lines.
The town has the home of the Nicolò Paganini and these areas saw Antonio Gianelli, the “Figlio della Pregheria” grow up. Interesting to visit is the Church that has a prestigious painting and in the community of Castello there is the simple yet mystical Church of St. Giorgio.
At Carrodano there is the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Roverano that was built in the 16th century and modified in the Baroque period. Another interesting place to visit is the artificial Lake of Mattarana. At Borghetto di Vara there are the ruins of an ancient Parish Church that still has a beautiful Baroque bell tower.
At Brugnato you can see the mighty 11th century Cathedral of St. Pietro that was built as a Benedictine Abbey and it is a center for pilgrims and wayfarers. |
