The strategical town palyed a great role in the historical vicissitudes of Lunigiana and developed as a “Castrum Novum” on the crest of the religious centers that consisted of the Church and the Bishop’s Villa.
During the battles between the Ghibelline’s and Guelph’s and the abandoning of Luni the Bishops-Counts were threatened by the powerful laical feudatory’s. This is how the defensive bastion was created in the first half of the 11th century and it was fortified around the existing villas.
The Palazzo-Castle was built by the Bishop Gualterio and it was completed by Enrico da Fucecchio. On the night between October 6-7, 1306 Dante Alighieri was a guest and he acted as an intermediary of the peace act signed by the Bishop of Luni Antonio Nuovolone De Camilla and by Francesco Malaspina of Mulazzo.
The late Renaissance church is dedicated to St. Maria Maddalena and it has a magnificent 19th century façade and on its portal you can admire a 1771 bas-relief. Works by the Genovese School, wooden statues, and precious marbles from Carrara can be admired as well as works by Peter Brueghel il Giovane (Calvario su tavola) and Van Dyck (Crocefissione).
Via Dante has rich buildings with noble portals and you can see the 18th century Piazzale of the Castle. The Casa Tonarelli and Palazzo Amati are classical examples of mixed architecture while Palazzo Ingolotti is home of the Enoteca Pubblica of Liguria and Lurigiana.
