How to get there: Highway A12 Genoa-La Spezia Exit at La Spezia.
The cheerful city is situated in a great position between the hills and it faces the magnificent Gulf of La Spezia that is also called the Gulf of Poets because of its magic.
La Spezia appears to the tourist as a lively modern city after it was reconstructed due the damages caused by WWII.
Even if the area has ancient origins the city appears only after the year 1200 as a small town.
In 1273 it was occupied by Oberto Doria and La Spezia became part of the Genoa Republic and it followed its vicissitudes for many years.
Throughout the centuries it was the home of the podestà of the vicar, the governor, the county seat of the Venere Gulf during the Neopoleanic times, the county seat of the province of levante, and today’s county seat since 1923.
The city is unique because of its large streets decorated with trees as well as elegant hotels and villas. But what makes it famous is the Military Shipyard that has powerful fortified walls and it is the strongest seaside fortress of the entire country.
Very ancient findings of the Bronze and Iron Ages are displayed in the Lunese Archeological Museum and it also has a precious collection of Roman art.
The Church of St. Maria Assunta was recently reconstructed and it has famous woks of great sculptor’s.
Up high there is the St. George Castle and form the ancient walls you can enjoy a marvelous view.
At the door of the Military Shipyard there is also the Technical Naval Museum that is of international importance. It has objects and memories that maintain the traditions alive as well as the pride of the Navy.
