How to get there: Highway A12 Genoa-La Spezia, exit at Carrodano and go along the State route towards Levanto.
It is the most famous town along the Riviera of Levante that goes from Sestri Levante to the area of the Cinque Terre. It seems to have pre-Roman origins due to various archaeological findings even though historical documents date back to the 12th century.
It was a feudal possession of the Malaspina family and later that of the Da Passano family. In 1229 it was given to the Republic of Genoa but it still maintained a certain degree of autonomy.
This bond further developed the sea activity of the town. In fact the residential area expanded to its present day boundaries.
It is protected by a mountainous amphitheater and the town has a beautiful beach that has nautical and athletic facilities. Thanks to its fantastic climate many tourist come to visit even during the winter.
During the summer the town is packed with tourists who love to sunbathe, surf, and have fun at night. They can also enjoy mountain excursions that enclose the bay.
Levanto also has various monuments that remind us of its Medieval past such as the Gothic Church of St. Andrea that has a splendid façade.
On its peak there is 12th century castle built by the Malaspina family for defense purposes. The Church of St. Francesco was built in 1449 and later rebuilt in 1615 and it has prestigious frescos.
Very interesting is the 13th century Loggia of the local government. One of the most beautiful excursions is that of the Sanctuary of the Madonna if Saviore. It is located in a breathtaking panoramic spot of the Cinque Terre and here love reigns forever.
