How to get there: Highway A12 Genoa-La Spezia, exit at Carrodano and continue towards Levanto and then Monterosso al Mare.
This is the greatest center of the Cinque Terre and although its residential area has maintained its ancient features it has also created elegant hotels and beautiful villas.
The name Cinque Terre derives from the fact that on the Riviera of Levante from Punta di Mesco to Portovenere there are 5 communities that are united thanks to numerous paths that inspired Petrarca.
Its beginning dates back to the 9th century and the ancient town became the feud of the Obertenghi and De Passano families. In 1276, it became part of the Republic of Genoa that decided to fortify the town.
The economy of the town depends on tourism thanks to is fantastic climate and wonderful position. However, it also depends on agricultural activities and it is known for is delicious wine of the Cinque Terre that is known worldwide.
The residential area is divided into two parts: Fegina and Monterosso. Monterosso made up the ancient residential nucleus and it has maintained its original urban structure.
The picturesque bell tower emerges from the old town and it belongs to the 13th century Gothic Church of St. John the Baptist and it has a marble façade. Near the church there is the Baroque Oratory of St. Maria del Porto Salvo and its ruins are enclosed in a modern structure of the Loggia of the Podestà. There is also a 16th century Oratory of St. Croce.
There is a knoll that divides the two neighborhoods and it has a Capuchin Convent and the Church of St. Francesco. The castle dominates the sea that is protected by the giant Neptune.
In the fascinating bay among delicate waves and the mild breeze you can enjoy marvelous sensations that helped inspire the unforgettable hermetic poems of the Noble Prize Winner Eugenio Montale.
