How to get there: Highway A12 Genoa-La Spezia exit at Brugnato and continue along the State road towards Rocchetta di Vara.
The charming town of the Val di Vara was founded by the inhabitants of Brugnato and later it became one of the many feudal possessions of the lords of Vezzano. Incorporated in the Marca Obertenga it became of the Estensi and Malaspina of Lunigiana in the 12th century.
It became an independent marquisate in the mid 16th century and its center was in the community of Suvero that was of the Malaspina family until 1797.
The population of Rocchetta di Vara is dedicated to agriculture just like in the past while others work in factories or industries . During holidays all the inhabitants seem to love to till the land and this is what makes it so magical.
The community of Suvero is picturesque and it has an enchanting town that has the most beautiful pine trees of the entire Ligurian region. Rocchetta di Vara has maintained the fascination of its ancient forms but there are also new homes that have a modern architecture.
Of particular interest is the 1500 Church of St. Giustina, the traces of the castle walls, and the ruins of the fortifications. In Suvero there is the mighty castle built by Malaspina in the 14th century that has been restructured.
The Parish Church of St. Giovanni Battista dates back to the same epoch and it has a beautiful 15th century bas-relief. Very pleasing are the walks through the pine trees and the excursions to the Sanctuary of N.S. del Dragone. At Zignago and at Monte Cornoviglio there is the charming town of Calice al Cornoviglio that is dominated by the Spino Castle.
