How to get there: Highway A12 Genoa-La Spezia exit at Sestri Levante and continue along the State Route 523 towards Varese Ligure. Or you can exit at Brugnato and continue along the State Route 566 towards San Pietro di Vara where it meets with the State Route 523. The ancient and fertile territory of Varese Ligure has a strong economy since the last century and today it is the main center of the Alta Val di Vara.
The city is a single urban structure that is highlighted by two different settlements. The older part (14th century) and the Borgo Rotondo named this because of its shape that intersects multicolored pastel arches.
Borgo Nuovo is more modern (16th century) and it goes along alleys that have beautiful homes. The town was a feud of the Fieschi family and it went to the Genovese in 1547 and it always played the role of a dominating commercial and road center of the entire valley.
Today it is a wonderful resort that has delicious cheese products and wool. Borgo Rotondo has a circular structure and it was defended by the castle that closed the picturesque piazza.
Recently it was acknowledged a certificate for its environmental quality and it has made it famous on a national level. The Fieschi Castle dates back to the 14th century and it has a very unique and personal structure.
There is a high tower and circular watch tower that represent the 15th century architecture.
In front of the castle there is the 17th century Church of St. Filippo Neri that has an 18th century façade. Very interesting is the Medieval Ponte on the torrent that unites the two communities. The superb Parish Church of St. Giovanni Battista that dates back to 1648 is in Baroque style.
Also interesting art the porticos of the old construction of the ancient Borgo and there are many shops where you can find wool and typical products of the Val di Vara.
In the community of Cassego there is a Museum that has precious findings of the old occupations. There are also excursions to the Passo del Bocco and Cento Croci while the nearby communities of Groppo and Santo Stefano are also very beautiful.
