How to get there: Highway A12 Genoa-La Spezia, exit at Carrodano and continue along the state route towards Levanto and turn at the fork for Vernazza.
The picturesque town, which is a wonderful location of the Cinque Terre faces a small bay in front of the Punta di Mesco and powerful rocks surround it.
The town has maintained its original Medieval structure intact and this is why it has become one of the most famous places of the Riviera of Levante.
It dates back to the year 1000 and throughout the centuries its inhabitants have become sailing experts.
In 1276, it passed from the domain of the Fieschi family to that of the Genoa Republic, which gave the town a port as well as powerful fortifications.
The elegance and prestige of its constructions highlight how in the past Vernazza was economically superior compared to the other communities of the Cinque Terre.
Its urban structure contains homes that lean against one another near the sea and by alleys that unite the narrow stairs. These features highlight the precious architectonic value of the town.
The Parish Church that faces the important Piazza was built in the Ligurian-Gothic style in 1318 on top of an earlier construction of the 9th century. Thanks to recent restorations the building has been brought back to its original state.
In the upper part of the town there are traces of the defensive walls and its old towers.
Of great interest is the Sanctuary della Madonna di Reggio (11th century) that can be reached by walking up a steep path that is surrounded by vineyards. The castle is a rare example of prestige that guards the sea located on a rocky spur.
Very mysterious and fascinating is the Grotta del Diavalo that recalls popular arcane legends. Nearby there is Corniglia that has an enchanting and one of a kind path.
