It is one of the main monumental historical centers in the west of the Liguria.
It was founded between the 4th and 6th centuries B.C. and it was the ancient capital of the Liguri Ingauni tribe.
It was allied to the Carthaginian’s during the second Punic War and later it was conquered by Rome. During the Empire it became a flourishing Roman Municipality.
After the year 1000 it became one of the first maritime communities that gained its own independence.
In 1098 it participated in the first Crusade and it was guaranteed privileges in Levante. In the 12th century it was annexed to the Republic of Genoa.
Today, Albenga is one of the main producers of fruits and vegetables but it is also famous for its seaside resorts that are frequented by tourists throughout the year.
The are many monuments and religious buildings that highlights the city’s glorious past.
There are numerous Medieval towers that attract the attention of all tourists.
Among the religious buildings the most interesting one is the Cathedral of St. Michele, which is a mighty temple of the Christian era. It was built in the 5th century and later it was rebuilt.
Many tourists visit Campochiesa where you can admire the 12th century Church of St. Giorgio as well as its frescos of great artistic value.
Very interesting and educational is a visit to the Lengueglia Castle at Casanova Lerrone in the community of Bassanico.
The architectonic patrimony of Albenga is one of the most fascinating of the entire region.
