How to get there: from the SS1 Aurelia going to Albisola Marina or exiting at Albisola (Highway A10 Genoa-Ventimiglia).
Albisola Superiore extends along the sides of the Aurelia along the road for Sassello and in the last 20 years it has developed greatly moving upward form its original spot beyond the railway.
The area extends from the sea to the hinterland and it is dominated by the 1700 Church of St. Nicolò. The Parish Church contains important sculptures and wooden statues by Anton Maria Maragliano and Gloria by Francesco Schiaffino.
The Manilo Trucco Museum is dedicated to the art of ceramics and it has prestigious paintings, Trucco ceramics and marvelous pieces of art by Arturo Martini.
The archeological area is full of historical treasures. In the last century diggings have been carried out and in the second half of the 1900’s interesting ruins of the Roman city “Alba Docilia” were found.
Near the railway station other historical discoveries were made that can be seen in the Church of St. Pietro that was rebuilt at the end of the 19th century on top of an 8th century sacred building.
Albisola Superiore has Medieval origins and here you can find Palazzo Gavotti that was built by Doge F.M. Della Rovere by widening a previous 15th century building and transforming it into a noble home in 1753. Inside it is decorated with sublime stuccos by the Lombard school and it offers a rare beauty that has been also admired in many movies.
The rooms of the “Quattro Stagioni” and the “Cappella” express the contents of this magnificent home. Its Italian garden is absolutely breathtaking with many fountains and fantastic marble art pieces.
Very enchanting is the Medieval Bridge on the Riobasco. From Albisola Superiore you can easily reach the shores of the sunny Albisola Marina, which is the reign of peace and artistic ceramic beauty that is famous worldwide.
