How to get there: Borghetto S.S. is located on the coastal road of the Via Aurelia (SS1) and it is easily reached by Highway A10 Ge-Ventimiglia exit at Pietra Ligure or Albenga.
If it is true that our ancestors chose a place of shelter and hunting in the dark world of the Grotte of Toirano then it is also true that a noble Roman Didius Callinicus chose the tranquil resort of Borghetto when on vacation. Borghetto also had Neolithic settlements and it was known to the Roman civilization because of its closeness to the sea. In fact, the Roman aristocrat chose a spot blessed by the gods, near the sea, and slightly elevated with a breathtaking view of the Ligurian Gulf.
The ruins of the Villa are visible from the 19th century garden of the Borelli Castle. In fact, a small alter is dedicated to the goddesses in memory of the great Roman civilization that settled in Borghetto. But its place-name dates back to 1260 when a group of homes developed around the Santo Spirito Hospital. This is how the old “Borghetto” was created with a rectangular base, which the original urban tissue still conserves. You can also admire two superb towers and the remake of the southern Baroque Door, which highlight the small fortified nucleus. Inside the 17th century Parish Church of St. Matteo you can enjoy beautiful paintings by Domenico Fiasella and Giuseppe Badalacco. Very interesting is the yellow Church of the Madonna della Guardia that has been recently restored and it is located in the historical center among cute alleys full of awesome shops.
Piazza del Municipio is waiting to be restored but, at Borghetto Santo Spirito you can notice the urban areas that have been added in the last years that have a modern maritime style such as: Piazza Marinai d’Italia and the Rosa dei Venti wharf, which is the main attraction of the seaside resort that has beautiful shores that offers all visitors a clean and clear sea with sandy beaches. The newer constructions have developed unorganized and it highlights the growing of the town that is expanding inward by changing the precious original urban structure. In the hinterland you can visit great towns in the Vallata of the Varatella Torrent.
Going along the rebuilt Church of Patarello you can reach the magnificent town of Toirano.
