Logo How to get there: From Albisola Marina take the SS 334 for about 23 kilometers. You will pass Stella, San Giovanni, Rovieto, San Giustina, and Badani.

The territory of the Apennine jewel developed from the watershed between the Faiallo and Giovo all the way to the legendary natural area of Monte Beigua. In the 12th century it belonged to the Marquis di Ponzone and then the Marquis Del Carretto. The Bastia Soprana was built during this period while during the time of the Doria family the fortified construction of the Bastia Soprana was built in the 15th century.

From 1612 it belonged to Genoa that benefited from its iron industry that was facilitated from the nearby coast (where the mineral reached the Elba Isalnd) and the water and thermal energy was extracted from the torrents and coal from the surrounding woods.

After the fire caused by the Savoy troops the city was rebuilt in 1672. Today the buildings in stone and limestone decorate the picturesque town as well as beautiful homes that are united together with narrow alleys and magnificent porticos.

Very interesting to visit is the Church della Concezione that was built between 1582 and 1584 that was once near a convent. The oldest religious building of Sassello is San Giovanni and since it was restored in the 18th century it doesn’t contain any of its original features.

The town’s economy is mainly based on tourism but this hasn’t modified the 18th century urban structure of the town and it also has medieval traces.

The charming town is popular because of its cool summer climate and for its delicious amaretti. It is the first local government of Liguria that has received the “Bandiera Arancione” because of it quality that was created by the Region and Italian Touring Club.

At Sassello history, culture, and gastronomy highlight the legendary scenery that from the crest of the Beigua you can admire the Ligurian gulf and the Alps.
