Logo How to get there: exit at Pietra Ligure Highway A10 Genoa-Ventimiglia and take the road that leads to Toirano.

Toriano is a precious Medieval town that is located where the Barescione and Varatella torrents meet. It has the form of a fortified Byzantine-Lombard nucleus were you can admire the marks on the doors of the typical tower-homes.

The town has Paleolithic origins but during the 2nd century it was a flourishing Roman center.

During the Carolingian Era the town was controlled by Benedictine Monks of St. Pietro di Varatella. After a brief possession of the town by the Bishop of Albenga, in 1385 Toirano was given to the Genovese.

In the Parish Church of St. Martin you can admire two precious canvases: “The Pentecost” by Giovanni Carbone and the “Marriage of the Virgin” by Giulio Benso. Very interesting is the 14th century bell tower.

The residential area of the ancient historical center contains Medieval elements as well as 16th century elements. These elements can be seen in Casa Durante, Palazzo Vescovile, and Palazzo Del Carretto.

The well-known agglomerate of Certosa was founded on the left hand side of the Varatella Torrent in 1945 by the Carthusian Monks.

However, Toirano is known for its historical Grotte (caves) and Prehistoric Museum that is of great scientific value.

A guided tour from the Grotta Biesura to the Cimitero degli Orsi, a large site where it has been found Ursus Spelaeus remains, and the footprints corridor, where Bears traces and men signs testify primitive man hunting. You can admire the natural course of the primitive man among kaleidoscope sculptures of stalactite and stalagmite.

The "Sala dei Misteri" and the two "Grotte" of St. Luca enrich the historical and cultural patrimony of Toirano.

For those who love excursions one must take the course that goes from Toirano to the small Church of St. Pietro dei Monti among the multicolor Mediterranean flowers.
